GOOD MORNING FROM LONDON #207 3 MAY 2021

In his recent Die Welt interview, Henry Kissinger states “I am not in favour of a crusade against China”. Clearly, Kissinger sees in current US policy – just that, a crusade against China. Despite big differences, says Kissinger, the two countries need to co-exist.

War is not co-existence + yet War is on the agenda. China does not sail its aircraft carriers close to San Francisco but the US sails its aircraft carriers close to Shanghai. China does not have overseas bases but the US in S China Sea is far away from its own territory.

Brinkmanship dominates + China is braced for war if the US attacks. The world wants co-existence. Compete over trade, technology, artificial intelligence, Mars and the Moon. But co-operate to avoid mass destruction. China will. Will the US?

And who is the US? – is it the military-industrial complex that Eisenhower warned against in 1959. Or is it the Think Tanks that recognise the need for mutual existence? The Jury Is Out.

Yang Jiechi of Anchorage fame wants greater co-operation but won’t accept a challenge to China’s political system or leadership. Lines have been drawn
