In a recent ruling in the city of Suqian, the Suyu District Intermediate Court upheld a ruling that a university text book that described homosexuality as a “psychological disorder” was merely an expression of “an academic view” rather than” a factual error”. The Court did not say whether the “academic view” was right or wrong and this reflects the attention the LGBT issue is receiving in China.
Published by Jinan University Press the 2013 edition of “Mental Health Education for College Students” listed homosexuality under “common psychological disorders” along with cross-dressing and fetishism. In the eight years since publication attitudes have undergone change and become more tolerant but it is still an issue to be addressed
This is not a hard hitting Puritan view that homosexuality is a sin. On the contrary it reflects the extent to which the existence of homosexuality is apparent. Attitudes towards LGBT communities in some major cities has changed in recent years with more tolerance although prejudice against sexual minorities prevails – as they do continue to prevail in the West.
