GOOD MORNING FROM LONDON
At a ceremony in Tiananmen Square to mark the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party of China (CCP), President Xi Jinping made a significant speech. Wearing a grey “Mao suit” that was broadcast live on national TV + social media, he was joined by the top CCP leadership + former leaders.
In recent days the CCP has been highlighting China’s economic growth + its efficient Covid-19 control. Xi repeated that China opposes hegemonism + power politics. With one eye on the approaching Western Armada led by the new UK aircraft carrier, Xi said that China “will never allow outside forces to bully us…anyone who tries to do so will be crushed to death before the Great Wall of steel built with the flesh+blood of over 1.4bn Chinese people.”
Xi’s speech was preceded by a flyover of advanced warplanes including J-20 stealth jets. Xi said – and his words matter – “The CCP has changed China’s future and destiny as well as the trend and structure of world’s development”.
With an eye on growing tensions in the S China Sea, he said “No one should underestimate the strong determination, firm will and strong ability of the Chinese people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
Words matter. People tend to disregard Big Speeches. Big Mistake. Will the US try, militarily, to take on China? It is more than possible. It is probable. Avoidable but probable.
