In a hard hitting article in the FT, the former UK Ambassador to Washington, Kim Darroch, says that “Johnson’s fawning to Trump will have done the UK no favours with Biden”.
Darroch refers to a number of Trump policy moments which caused trouble to the UK including his ‘Muslim Ban’, ‘his retweeting of Islamophobic video clips from the UK’, and the occasion when Trump had been guest of honour at a gala dinner at Blenheim Palace + then gave an interview to the Sun criticising PM Theresa May, for ‘wrecking Brexit and destroying prospects of a UK-US trade deal’.
Darroch describes Trump as ‘self-obsessed and undisciplined’ + then, significantly, criticises PM Johnson for stating that ‘Trump was making America great again’ + for suggesting that Trump was ‘a candidate for a Nobel Peace Prize’.
Darroch says that Biden staffers have made clear to him that the UK will have a price to pay for ‘our obsequiousness’ to Trump. “What were you thinking?” – the staffers enquire.
Expect rough times ahead in US/UK relations.
