This is a question at the heart of issues in the S China Sea. Are we witnessing the beginning of a power play by China leading to a land grab in the Far East.?
China knows that the US might strike. This is the Thucydides Principle developed by US academic Graham Allison. The US is challenged economically but China needs stability to continue its prosperity not a war to disrupt its development. China does not intervene in other countries. There are no Communist Parties in SE Asia acting as proxies for China.
With US aircraft carriers sailing close to Chinese main ports, China feels threatened. It is actively defensive, alert, aware with eyes wide open to protect its achievements. But military expansion, land grab, subjugating other countries, creating a Pax China? No.
