A break from the big political issues today with a report that a Beijing court has ordered a husband to pay his divorce-seeking wife 50,000 yuan in compensation for five years unpaid labour at home during their marriage.
Mr Chen + Ms Wang were married in 2015. They have one child. In the divorce Wang demanded an equal split of the couple’s marital assets + asked for 160,000 yuan as compensation for housework + childcare.
China’s first-ever Civil code came into effect at start of 2021 giving spouses the right to claim compensation if he/she does the lion’s share of duties at home incl raising children + looking after elderly family members.
A 2018 survey found that Chinese women spend an average of 2hrs 6mins on housework each day – three times that of men.
