You will read/see much in the media about fears of Chinese led espionage. It is a distraction to take the focus away from China’s growing participation in global innovation. What do I mean?
The media refers to Chinese access to “digital data…technological bifurcation…’ smart cities’ innovation…cyber snooping”. It is a form of “Reds under the Beds’ paranoia that gripped the US in the 1950s.
What is reality? – As James Kynge says in today’s FT “China moves to the forefront of global innovation”. Information from the European Patent Office shows that patent awards to Chinese companies rose by 10% in 2020 – faster than in any other large economy. The World Intellectual Property Organisation shows that Huawei is the leading corporate applicant for patents and two-thirds of applications came, in 2020, from Asian companies.
China is on the move and has to be discredited so focus on spying allegations. It is another example of “Closing Your Eyes To Reality”.
A shift in world power is underway and the West is floundering.
