GOOD MORNING FROM LONDON #160
Johnson plans to develop deeper trade links with China and avoid a new Cold War. But how to handle the genocide allegations against China previously voiced by his government? He re-designates He has dropped references to genocide and instead talks of “mass detention”. That is a big change. Really big.
Genocide means mass killings or mass forced sterilisation and that is what the UK, until yesterday, has alleged against China. “Mass detention” – today’s words – is quite different. In fact totally different. No race hate, Nobodies. No slaughter. All now consigned to the dustbin.
Why the change? Johnson needs China. He needs its economy; its growth; its investment; it is the future. His policy now is not the isolation of China but a full-tilt to China – an embrace of China
.
Johnson will have political problems. Anti-communist Tory MPs will join forces with Labour MP’s with human rights considerations uppermost. It will trigger a full debate and discussion about China – truth, as well as fiction, will now be on the agenda.
