The world has watched scenes of pro-Trump supporters storming the US Congress in amazement.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson likened the US unrest to the 2019 protests in Hong Kong when protestors broke into and vandalised the territory’s Legislative Council. “When similar things happened in HK, some Americans and US media reacted differently” said China’s spokesperson.
Raab and Pompeo and others were silent about the violence of the HK protestors – made no reference or condemnation at all. And yet, yesterday, the same duo were so eloquent in their condemnation of the Trump supporters.
There is an important political point here. At the heart of China’s response to the violence in HK was the National Security Law derided by Raab/Pompeo as an “attack on human rights”.
What goes around comes around, and the US/UK determination to belittle China leads to selective indignation and fundamental inconsistencies.
