Many people heaved a sigh of relief when Biden beat Trump. The Good Guys Are Back. Trump is history. The bad dream is over. Well not quite.

The US is very divided. Trump with his 74m votes is not down + out – a has-been – yesterday’s man. The violence in the Capitol on 6 January 2021 was a statement. The US remains vulnerable with people outside the US wondering which America will prevail – the extremism of Trump or the moderation of Biden.

But there is a bigger point – it is the extent to which US moral leadership has taken a big bump and what it means for the battle already underway between Democracy v Authoritarian Governance. The US model is significantly holed below the water line + around the world we will see less of one man one vote and more of authoritarian governments who will become permanent if they can deliver rising prosperity.

Many will fail but here the issue of China becomes so relevant. If China succeeds, its model of government succeeds.
