This Column has constantly drawn attention to the possibility of War in the Far East. A fundamental change is now taking place in the Balance of Power. The US is about to be relegated to #2 as China becomes the #1 Economy. The Thucydides Principle forecasts War as China eclipses the US.
The US is engaged in a full-frontal attempt to prevent China from becoming #1. Today the focus is on growing tensions in the S China Sea, genocide allegations re Xinjiang Uyghurs, + repeated claims that China let loose Covid-19 on the world via its lab in Wuhan.
As part of the emerging picture, today US Senior Diplomat, Wendy Sherman, held a “candid” meeting with Cambodian PM, Hun Sen, + warned of “serious concerns” re China’s alleged military presence at a Cambodian naval base following a Cambodian decision in March 2021 to raze a US-built facility on Ream Naval base that served as HQ for US National Committee on Maritime Security. Cambodia’s closer relations with China coincide with growing tensions between Cambodia + US/EU.
Will War happen? Probably – and with big consequences for world politics. The World will change significantly. Maybe, as we in the UK emerge with smiles from Covid, it is difficult to comprehend but the Build Up to War is underway.
