Yuan Yang is the Deputy Bureau Chief of the FT in Beijing and a respected writer on China affairs.
In her attached article she informs FT readers that China’s leadership will commence discussions today to set the country’s long term priorities with the focus on “boosting technological self-sufficiency and domestic demand.” The 5th Plenum of the CPC will last until 29 October. These are very important meetings within China’s system of government.
Previously the widely stated goal of China was to build a “moderately prosperous society” by 2021 which is the centenary of the founding of the Party in Shanghai.
Recently Xi Jinping has used the term “dual circulation” which has as its focus the development of domestic demand and self-sufficiency. This is not just a protection against the “de-coupling” policies of the US/Europe but China will take these matters into account to ensure the continued stability and prosperity of the country – always China’s major goal.
