In a significant development German prosecutors have dropped their investigation into Gerhard Sabathil, the former EU envoy to S Korea after failing to substantiate allegations that he spied for China.

German investigators had searched 9 offices/homes In Germany/Belgium as part of the investigation into charges that Sabathil was “an informant and a recruiter” for Chinese foreign intelligence. From the start Sabathil proclaimed his innocence and said “my relations with China are all clean”

The collapse of the investigation will stir the debate about whether European fears about Chinese security threats are valid, and about Huawei in particular.

This is just part of the overall struggle between the declining superpower, the US, and the growing influence of China. The US is worried. Sometimes people miss seeing the significance of the present as an historical moment of change. This current period is of immense relevance to the future of the world.
