Japanese fashion retailer – Muji – said yesterday its stores will continue to carry products made with Xinjiang cotton. The company’s apparel clearly carries the label “Xinjiang cotton”.
Ryohin Keikaku – operators of Muji – have conducted due diligence in Xinjiang on all companies in Xinjiang that are involved in its supply chain, a company spokesman told Nikkei Asia. “The investigation was done by an independent auditing body, based on the Xinjiang Supply China Business Advisory from the US government and other guidance issued by institutions and governments such as the OECD.”
China is an important market for Muji with 274 stores in China.
Watch out for a Boycott Backlash by Chinese consumers – Nike, Adidas and GAP are in the frame. Wang Yibo, a famous Chinese singer and Nike’s brand ambassador has ceased all collaboration with Nike with immediate effect. The People’s Daily # “I support Xinjiang cotton” had 85m views by 25/March 2021.
