GOOD MORNING FROM LONDON #158
We all look back + reflect on the past. In my youth, we were assisted by a famous historian – AJP Taylor – who would give television lectures on World War 1.
Future historians will speak to our grandchildren’s grandchildren about a big moment in history that is happening now – in 2021 up to 2030.
The event? – akin to the Spanish Armada, Waterloo in 1815 + Stalingrad in 1943 is the moment in time when China becomes the largest economic power in the world. Leave aside loyalties or preferences or likes/dislikes. Just focus on the event + what it portends for the world + succeeding generations.
So significant in so many ways – some we can see now + some which will only become apparent down the years.
But it is Big and we are fortunate to be living through it as it happens. This is much bigger than Taiwan or Hong Kong or S China Sea or 750m Chinese being lifted out of poverty. These things pre-occupy us today but will become footnotes tomorrow.
It is not a case of China Reigning Supreme. It is about the evolution of time, of life, of societies and cultures and we are fortunate enough to be living through it.
