Janan Ganesh writes an interesting article in today’s FT. An unchallenged US is a divided US. The US needs its enemies to maintain its own internal cohesion. A sports coach looking to consolidate his team’s unity + focus will stir the old animosities. It works every time.

“The US best hope of retaining some cohesion in the coming decades is a mighty China”. Think about it.

The US is struggling with China. US hegemony is under attack. China is getting stronger by the day. China is big. But China presents a second challenge, it is different – not a Western democracy but an authoritarian system that has brought unparalleled prosperity + happiness to its people.

Trump was divisive + unstable + broke up coalitions. Biden will do it differently + try to make friends – in the UN, over the Iran deal and with the EU and the WHO. He will also point the finger at China. He will maintain the Uighur genocide myth, the China “threat” in the S China Sea, + the China challenge in Africa + Latin America. China is ready. Interesting times ahead.
